I am still warming up “The Dr. Oz Show” & it’s been a lot of fun. We are in studio 6a at 30 Rockefeller Center right across the hall from “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”. Since both our shows share one hallway, we get to see many of the guests from Jimmy’s show! My first week there, I walked by Smokey Robinson!!! That was pretty great! Apparently, there have been guests on ‘Fallon’ (mostly musical) that have caused some of the staff from our show to get a bit excited. It wasn’t me (unless you consider my ‘How cool am I’ nod to Smokey). So, a memo went out stating that we should leave the “Late Night” guests alone when we pass them in the hallway. This is all well & good, except someone should have informed their guests! It’s been hilarious watching a major star like Jon Bon Jovi walking down the hall, completely oblivious to the memo, wondering why no one will even look at him, much less say hello! Or, Richie Sambora, staring directly at me until finally I said, “What’s up?” and he gleefully came back with “Hey man? How ya doin’?!?!” But I, of course, did end up making a fool of myself. Elvis Costello was on one day. I was able to see his rehearsal & he was great! Later on, I was in the men’s room at the end of the hall, all by myself, when who walks in but the great Elvis Costello! I was washing my hands at the sink & he was just standing there…staring at me. I have to admit I was a little uncomfortable. (If I were at the urinal I would have been down-right frightened.) I didn’t know why he was staring at me? Did he want me to leave? Was he hoping I said hello? I finally turned & said, “How ya doin’?” He tersely said, “Good.” And kept right on staring!!! I thought maybe he was shy & didn’t want me in there while he went! Finally he said, “Are you going to be long?” and I realized he was waiting for the sink! He had a neti pot & needed water for it. He said he heard the water in this bathroom was hotter & I said it was. (Like I have any clue!!!) I backed away from the sink & let him get around me. He said, “Thanks.” I said, “No problem.” And…as I went to leave…I told him, (With far too much exuberance!) “Good luck on the show! I saw the rehearsal & you were great!!!” He looked at me like I was the idiot that I sounded like & said, “Thanks.” I’m pretty sure he was embarrassed for me. After all, I am a forty-six year old man sounding like a little school girl!!! Anyway, Ringo Starr was on a few weeks later & you can only imagine what a fool I made of myself that day! But, that is another ‘Rant’ for another time…
